On Wednesday January 25th archaeologists from the Blackfriary Project and Dig it Kids visited our sixth classes. They provided fun, hands on learning for our budding young archaeologists. The boys participated in an experiment making Oak Gall Ink. The facilitators explained the history and background behind the ink and the methods used in making it. Following the discussion, the boys, in groups, followed the step by step instructions to make the ink. Firstly they selected the oak gall and then with the help of a homemade pestle and mortar (stone and rock) the boys crushed the oak gall until it resembled a fine powdery substance. This was then added to a liquid solution of vinegar, ironsulphate and gum Arabic. The boys were given the opportunity to practice writing their names with the newly produced ink and goose feathers. This was a very interesting, informative and enjoyable experience for all.
