27/5/17

On Friday the 26th of May, Ms. Shine’s third class visited Trim Castle. We have been very busy learning about castles and learning about who lived in these castles. Our tour guide took us to all the important sites around the castle. We had learned about the moate, the battlements, the arrow loops and much more. We really enjoyed finding these features in the castle. It was a beautiful sunny day and it was a fanastic oppertunity to visit such a wonderful historic site for free in our town.

Tommy and the Tayto Factory

Well done to pupils from Ms. Treacy’s third class who performed their sketch entitled “ Tommy and the Tayto Factory” for families, friends and other pupils on Monday May 29th. The sketch recounted the story of a poor young boy who won a ticket that granted him access to the amazing Tayto Factory. The sketch included singing and dancing and we were all entertained by the funny voices and even some painted faces!

Science Week- Ms Shine's Class

We had lots of fun during Science week learning about famous scientists and carrying out some fun experiments. We carried out an investigation called the Raisin Bubble Boogie, we watched the raisins dance around the solution that contained carbon dioxide. There was a lot of pressure in the jar which caused the raisins to boogie. We also made some Sherbet Fizz using Bicarbonate and Citric acid with a little bit of icing sugar and food colouring. It was very messy but we enjoyed getting our hands dirty.

Canopic Jars were very important to the Ancient Egyptians. They would use them during the mummification process to hold the organs needed for the afterlife.  Each jar represented one of the Four Sons of Horus- Imsety, Hapi, Duamatef and Qebehsenuf. After we made the jar we made the organs out of clay to put inside the jars. We really loved this art activity.

Last half term we hade lots of fun learning about the Ancient Egyptians. We were very interested in the process of mummification so we decided to carry out a science investigation in the form of a Fair Test. We observed and recorded information about the tomatoes over time as they began to rot. Finally, we were able to extract all the fluid from the tomatoes, it was very messy but lots of fun. We enjoyed making predictions during the investigation.

We have had a wonderful start to the year learning all about the Egyptians. All of the children submitted a wonderful project on Ancient Egyptian God's. It was clear that a lot of research went into these projects as they were all outstanding! The children could recall many facts about the Gods and how important they were to the Ancient Egyptians. The children have also written fantastic recounts, they were based on the discovery of King Tutankhamun's Tomb. Pictures to follow.
