About Us

History of our School

St. Michael’s Primary School was opened on the 29th of September 1986 by Mr. Paddy Cooney T.D.,Minister for Education and Bishop John McCormack, assisted by Bishop Michael Smith, who officially blessed the building. Prior to 1986, the Christian Brothers provided primary education for boys at the Model School located at the old Convent Primary School.

In 2001, St. Michael’s was asked to open a Special Class for children with autism spectrum disorder by the Department of Education and Science. The school management, staff and students embraced the idea with enthusiasm. A playground for the children with autism, funded by the Department of Education and Science has since been built.

Mr. Sean O’ Diomasaigh was the Principal from the opening of the school until  2002 when Mrs. Kathleen Perkins replaced him as Acting Principal until Sept 2004.

Mr. Fergal Kelly was appointed  Principal in 2004. Changes have been made throughout the school. The uniform was changed and the boys dress in grey trousers, grey shirt, green jumper, green jacket, green and silver tie and black shoes. The  Centre for Autism has grown to the point where we now have six classes, and a new pre-school for children with Autism was set up in 2010. An extension is in the planning process now in 2014.

Mr. Fergal Fitzpatrick took over as Principal in 2011 and Ms. Bríd Gorry was appointed Deputy Principal in November 2014.

The school has  maintained the traditions of the Christian Brothers over the past twenty years. This can be put down to the dedication and professionalism of the staff. St. Michael’s Primary School has been a flagship in the development of I.T.over many years and this was recognized by the NCTE by the provisions of our networked computer facility.

Our school has been in the forefront of European awareness and continues to maintain many links with other European partnership links. St. Michael’s Primary School has been visited by teachers, pupils and parents from Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, Portugal, England, Holland, Spain, Japan, Canada, Australia and most recently Scotland. Student teachers from Australia and Denmark have elected to do their teaching practice at our school. The introduction and the funding by the Department of Education and Science of the teaching of French in 1998 recognised the commitment of the school community to the full integration of its students within the European Union.

Environmental issues have been highlighted in St. Michael’s Primary School by its participation in environmental projects for which the school has won several awards. These projects have been practically based and are visible in the pleasant environment around the school. The school has achieved its first  Green Flag in 2013 and we are now working to achieve the second. The students actively participate in litter prevention, recycling and planting projects which enhance the school environment.

Parents and students support a healthy eating programme and a breakfast club was started by Mr. Kelly for disadvantaged students.

On the sports field St.Michael’s Primary School has been at the forefront in promoting team spirit in our national games of Hurling and Football. Famous students, Darren Fay and Mark O’ Reilly, most notable for their sporting abilities, have all spent their primary school years at St. Michael’s. Games are promoted in other codes also and in 1996, we won the All Ireland Schools Soccer Championship. We repeated this feat again in 2013 at The Aviva Stadium and are now one of only a handful of schools to have won the All Ireland twice in our history.
